On order of King Henry VI of England, in order to isolate Mont Saint-Michel, the last French bridgehead into Norman territory, he had the walls of Granville built. Granville County was formed in 1746 from Edgecombe County and was named in honor of John Carteret, Earl of Granville, who owned the Granville District. Empty mussel and crab shells, fish bones and other evidence of the day’s activities were washed away by the tide, leaving nothing but pristine sand to rise again with the next receding tide to welcome its visitors. The first county seat was called Granville Court House; however, in 1748 the location selected became unsatisfactory and the courthouse was ordered to be located on a branch of Tar River called Tabbs Creek.
