The beginner trail (Tindo) is short and there isn't much elevation gain but it's a little rootier and rockier than I'd expected. Trails are expensive to construct, maintain and repair. It is an undulating track with a steep staircase up the highest pitch.

Awesome fun. Lake James State Park offers a full menu of activities. Kinda reminds me of certain sections of warrior creek, but with even less climbing. Walk-up camping are available only at certain loops at Jordan Lake and Kerr Lake and at backcountry campsites with self-registration boxes at trailheads. I utterly shredded this trail. East wimba doesn't flow as well and isn't completely packed in some areas yet( more recently built?) As of 2018, very few roots. Beginner loops are exactly that. Should be perfect for the final weekends of 2015 riding season.
The park is only about 10-15min from I-40, so certainly worth the stop if you're passing through - worth the drive for a daytrip ride...I combined a run to Kitsuma(30mi away) and Lake James and made for a great day of riding. Smooth for the most part.

The Tindo Loops offer about 3.5 miles of smooth beginner trails with little elevation change. No great views but the trail does wind by the lake. The mountain bike trails at Lake James State Park opened on National Trails Day, June 7, 2014.The trail system augments a swim beach, bathhouse, picnic areas, foot trails and a maintenance compound that have been opened at the parks Paddys Creek Area since 2010. Changing stall in the trailhead lot, great camping sites in the park, awesome views from the fishing pier (put a line in to relax after my ride), beautiful views up at Linville Gorge, and one of the finest lake swim beaches in NC(seasonal). Great shape for the amount of rain they got and being closed for almost a week, a little more rain due on 10/10/2015. The trail is a flat, easy trek through riparian forest adjacent to Paddy's Creek. As mentioned, not overly technical, but there are plenty of whoops and jumps on the downhills to catch air.
It is still tons of fun.
Tucked away in rolling hills at the base of Linville Gorge is Lake James, a 6,510-acre lake with more than 150 miles of shoreline. Check'em out. Great work by the trail builders. I rode these trails yesterday and thought the builders did a great job on them.
