Extensive hiking, an RV park, campgrounds and the Nakiska Ski Resort are all located along this section of road. Your photos are breathtaking! You don’t have many choices for an overnight stay but the ones you have are superb. The road to the Highwood Pass, the highest paved road in Canada, topping out at 2,206 metres, is only open seasonally.

world. I hope I meet you on Canadian soil one day. Many cross-country skiers and snowshoers, however, enjoy trekking along the closed highway. There are excellent trails on each side of the highway, but even if you just park the car and look around, the views are out of this. That sunrise is magical and the landscape is just divine. My consulting company will use this route to teach the next generation of water quality sampling students. If you have visitors from places were there's no mountains, this is a stunning place to take them!
There was still snow off the road near the summit and was late June.
Her blog: HikeBikeTravel is frequently cited as one of the top travel and outdoor adventure blogs in Canada. Saw lots of wildlife, snow, and mountain. In every direction I looked, it was drop-dead gorgeous. Closed to cars December 1 to June 15 every year, but stunning when it's open It's the highest paved road in Canada, and it brings you pretty close to the treeline without having to get out of your car.
No never travelled along the Highwood Pass, nor been to Canada. NOTE: The highway does not open until June 15, but in the weeks prior, the roads are generally clear of snow, and the highway and pass then become one of the regions premier cycling routes. When we drive the wonderful "Highway 40 Loop," we always look forward to stopping here.
Definitely heed the speed limit, or drive slower and stay aware. This sounds like a beautiful region, I love multi-coloured mountains. Sometimes you’ll see them from the safety of the car. It’s also a favourite outing for the motorcycle crowd and cyclists love it too.
The Highwood Pass Loop in Canada is gorgeous. Hikes range from short, easy family-friendly outings like Arethusa Cirque or Ptarmigan Cirque to full day affairs.
Where can you stay overnight if you do the drive? Then the hills would have been awash in colour and even prettier.
Great tourist places. I was doing some water sampling for Chemex Labs (AB) Ltd in 1979 and had to go over the pass. Your photos are beautiful.
Kananaskis Trail runs through the pass, and offers access to a multitude of camping grounds and recreational areas. Required fields are marked *. There are numerous hiking trails accessed from the highway including the popular 10.3 kilometre Pickle Jar Lakes trail from the Lantern Creek Recreation Area.
Thanks for reading! The Pocaterra ridge walk in larch season in September is one of the more spectacular hikes in the Rockies. It must have been hard not to keep stopping to take pictures. It is closed from December 1st until June 15th to protect the bighorn sheep. Wow; simply WOW!!! It lies west of Mount Rae and Mount Arethusa of the Misty Range, south of the Elbow Pass.
