25 Now it came to pass the same night that the Lord said to him, “Take your father’s young bull, the second bull of seven years old, and (AG)tear down the altar of (AH)Baal that your father has, and (AI)cut down the [g]wooden image that is beside it; 26 and build an altar to the Lord your God on top of this [h]rock in the proper arrangement, and take the second bull and offer a burnt sacrifice with the wood of the image which you shall cut down.” 27 So Gideon took ten men from among his servants and did as the Lord had said to him. 28 When the men of the town rose early in the morning, behold, the altar of Baal was broken down, and the Asherah beside it was cut down, and the second bull was offered on the altar that had been built. and where be all his miracles which our fathers tolde vs of, saying, Did not the Lord bring vs vp from Egypt? The meat he put in a basket, and the broth he put in a pot, and brought them to him under the terebinth and presented them. To this day it still stands at (AF)Ophrah, which belongs to the Abiezrites. When God furnishes a land with faithful ministers, it is a token that he has mercy in store for it. 6 And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord: and the Lord delivered them into the hand of Midian seven years. (7-10) Gideon set to deliver Israel. Let us do our duty, and trust God with our safety. 19 ¶ And Gideon went in, and made ready a kid, and vnleauened cakes of an Ephah of floure: the flesh he put in a basket, and he put the broth in a pot, and brought it out vnto him vnder the oake, and presented it.
Then the angel of the Lord departed out of his sight. 22 And when Gideon perceiued that hee was an Angel of the Lord, Gideon said, Alas, O Lord God: for because I haue seene an Angel of the Lord face to face. 3 And so it was, when Israel had sown, that the Midianites came up, and the Amalekites, and the children of the east, even they came up against them; 4 And they encamped against them, and destroyed the increase of the earth, till thou come unto Gaza, and left no sustenance for Israel, neither sheep, nor ox, nor ass. 23 Then the Lord said to him, (AE)“Peace be with you; do not fear, you shall not die.” 24 So Gideon built an altar there to the Lord, and called it [f]The-Lord-Is-Peace. 18 Please (X)do not depart from here until I come to you and bring out my present and set it before you.” And he said, “I will stay till you return.”.
6 So Israel was greatly impoverished because of the Midianites, and the children of Israel (G)cried out to the Lord. 7:11; [ver. For now I have seen the angel of the Lord face to face.” 23 But the Lord said to him, (AD)“Peace be to you. Here is a challenge to Baal, to do either good or evil; the result convinced his worshippers of their folly, in praying to one to help them that could not avenge himself.33-40 These signs are truly miraculous, and very significant. 11 ¶ And there came an Angel of the Lord, and sate vnder an Oake which was in Ophrah, that pertained vnto Ioash the Abi-Ezrite: and his sonne Gideon threshed wheat by the winepresse, to hide it from the Midianites. 1 And the children of Israel did euill in the sight of the Lord: and the Lord deliuered them into the hande of Midian seuen yeeres. 39 And Gideon said unto God, Let not thine anger be hot against me, and I will speak but this once: let me prove, I pray thee, but this once with the fleece; let it now be dry only upon the fleece, and upon all the ground let there be dew. Does he desire that God will be as the dew to all Israel?

It was needful he should make peace with God, before he made war on Midian. (1-6) Israel rebuked by a prophet. behold, my family is poor in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father's house. And hee saide, I will tary vntill thou come againe. he that will plead for him, let him be put to death whilst it is yet morning: if he be a god, let him plead for himself, because one hath cast down his altar. He sees the fleece wet with dew to assure him of it. To this day it is still (AF)in Ophrah of the Abiezrites. 2 And the hand of Midian preuailed against Israel: and because of the Midianites, the children of Israel made them the dennes which are in the mountaines, and caues, & strong holds. 34 But the Spirit of the Lord came upon Gideon, and he blew a trumpet; and Abiezer was gathered after him. 22 Now Gideon (AC)perceived that He was the Angel of the Lord. 39 And Gideon said vnto God, Let not thine anger be hote against me, and I will speake but this once: Let mee prooue, I pray thee, but this once with the fleece. 18 (X)Do not depart from here, I pray, until I come to You and bring out my offering and set it before You.”, And He said, “I will wait until you come back.”. 33 Then all (AK)the Midianites and Amalekites, the people of the East, gathered together; and they crossed over and encamped in (AL)the Valley of Jezreel. behold, my family is poore in Manasseh, and I am the least in my fathers house.

17 And he said unto him, If now I have found grace in thy sight, then shew me a sign that thou talkest with me. 5 For they would come up with their livestock and their tents, coming in as numerous as locusts; both they and their camels were [a]without number; and they would enter the land to destroy it.
Hereby a sign was given to Gideon, that he had found grace in God's sight. 40 And God did so that night: for it was drie vpon the fleece onely, and there was deaw on all the ground. 31 And Joash said unto all that stood against him, Will ye plead for Baal?
And he said to them, “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: (I)I led you up from Egypt and brought you out of the house of slavery. 2 And the hand of Midian prevailed against Israel: and because of the Midianites the children of Israel made them the dens which are in the mountains, and caves, and strong holds.
Bishop Hall says, While God calls Gideon valiant, he makes him so. And where are (P)all his wonderful deeds (Q)that our fathers recounted to us, saying, ‘Did not the Lord bring us up from Egypt?’ But now the Lord has forsaken us and given us into the hand of Midian.” 14 And the Lord[a] turned to him and said, “Go in this might of yours and save Israel from the hand of Midian; (R)do not I send you?” 15 And he said to him, (S)“Please, Lord, how can I save Israel?
24 Then Gideon built an altar there unto the LORD, and called it Jehovahshalom: unto this day it is yet in Ophrah of the Abiezrites. 6 And Israel was brought very low because of Midian. 33 ¶ Then all the Midianites, and the Amalekites, and the children of the East were gathered together, and went ouer, and pitched in the valley of Iezreel. He charges them with rebellion against the Lord; he intends to bring them to repentance. 33 Then all the Midianites and the Amalekites and the children of the east were gathered together, and went over, and pitched in the valley of Jezreel. 37 Behold, I will put a fleece of wool in the floor; and if the dew be on the fleece only, and it be dry upon all the earth beside, then shall I know that thou wilt save Israel by mine hand, as thou hast said. 35 And he sent messengers throughout all Manasseh, who also gathered behind him. Let it now be drie onely vpon the fleece, and vpon all the ground let there be deaw. 5 For they came up with their cattle and their tents, and they came as grasshoppers for multitude; for both they and their camels were without number: and they entered into the land to destroy it.

Gideon was weak in faith, which made it hard to reconcile the assurances of the presence of God with the distress to which Israel was brought.

But now the Lord hath forsaken vs, and deliuered vs into the hands of the Midianites.
