Dirty & Rowdy operates very much like Broc, prospecting California for grapes and vineyards off the beaten trail, though with a more puckish attitude. Mellow Corn is made with 81% corn and is the only bottled-in-bond corn whiskey on the market.

It all may seem a bit depressing to fans of good whiskey, but luckily there are still exceptional bourbons out there for less than twenty dollars a bottle. It’s basic and uncomplicated stuff with some unique apple notes, a strong vanilla character, and a good dose of cinnamon. Cinzia Canzian, the winemaker, achieves the bubbles through the bulk-production Charmat method, also used for industrial Prosecco. On the palate, it’s quite sweet – think cinnamon sugar, chocolate-covered caramels, and just the lightest touch of honey-doused cornbread. Chiara Condello, a young producer from a family of winemakers, makes this wine under her own label. It’s a non-age-statement bourbon, but it has a slightly higher proof than most lower-shelf offerings. 90 proof. It’s a great value in the US, too.

The lower proof helps to make it an easy sipper with a lovely caramel and vanilla body flecked with lemon, honeysuckle, and heather notes.

$18, 8. Pierre & Rodolphe Gauthier Domaine du Bel Air Bourgueil Jour de Soif 2019 $17.99, Domaine du Bel Air, run by a father-and-son team, makes fine, age-worthy wines from organic cabernet franc.

You can buy a gallon of hard liquor (rum, burbon, vodka, tequilla, gin) for about $12 to $16 bucks. Seriously, in the days before theater and restaurants closed down, I enjoyed reading about a play that opened in London or a restaurant in Los Angeles without the immediate expectation of experiencing either.

This white blend, two-thirds pinot gris, one-third pinot blanc, is savory and sumptuous, not at all heavy but quite refreshing.

For a bit more pocket change, Old Grand-Dad Bonded shows more nuance with the same lighter profile while Old Grand-Dad 114 proof gives an all-around bolder and richer flavor experience. They are there, but it’s like going to a buffet — just because the tray of chicken wings is there, doesn’t mean you need to eat forty of them. Not only is it affordable, but a smooth body and calm palate make it easy to put down as a shot, over a rock, dropped into a beer, or in a mixed drink (what we’re saying is it’s easy to drink no matter how you take your whiskey).
