I loved this book and did not want it to end. I didn't much care for the epilogue either. I was looking for another story similar to "The School of Essential Ingredients" and this sadly reminded me of the problems that I had with "The Art of Mixing. But paradise, like childhood, has a fixed term, and one traumatic incident whisks Emmeline off her island into a society that she finds finds both intriguing and terrifying.

I enjoyed this book but it wasn’t unputdownable. The machine produces “scent-papers” that her father stashes inside small glass bottles, each paper preserving a one-of-a-kind scent. Thought-provoking themes include father/daughter relationships, loyalty, trust, sacrifice, secrets, and coming of age. This author writes as though she is painting an exquisite story but in this one she dropped the ball and left me feeling cheated. All she has to do is to take her father’s advice: follow her nose, and then get out of its way. Emmeline lives in a great world for a while until the time comes when she realizes things that her father has told her are not true.

The part Emmeline spends on the island with her father, the time she spends with Henry and Claudia living in The Cove, and the time she spends in the big city (which I think is Vancouver) hunting for Fisher and her mother.
