The river and trees are pretty, but the Durango desert backdrop is pretty bad. There are many good campsites along the way. It was cool in the morning, and not too busy early. Located within the Columbine Ranger District of San Juan National Forest, the 6.7 mile Animas River Trail is rated more difficult and has a starting elevation of 7,700' (Electra Lake & Mountain View Crest) and an ending elevation of 8,300' (Bridge at Needle Creek Trail) and follows the riverbank. Since this is a major drainage, all water used should be filtered to prevent possible Giardia contamination.
