We rode our ebikes the whole distance of this paved trail. Some homeless population in a park along the trail to keep an eye out for. The river and trees are pretty, but the Durango desert backdrop is pretty bad. There are many good campsites along the way. It was cool in the morning, and not too busy early. The trail runs along the river, crossing over in several spots via scenic bridges.

The sound of the highway makes it difficult to enjoy the walk peacefully and listen to the river. Check them out. We also went up to Fort Lewis College via College road to see the city from the Mesa overlook but would recommend you either drive up or have electric bikes because it is quite the climb. This trail is used by horse outfitters, expect to see horse traffic and be respectful of other trail users. We saw several animals. But we did this trail on electric cruiser bikes. Access #2: This trail can also be accessed from the Needle Creek Trail. Since there are access points for this trail, please see the description of the Needle Creek Trail for a complete listing of its access points. As of May 6 there was a section near the Skate park is getting being redone. You feel like you are much farther from the city than you really are, especially on the southern end.

Nice and easy hike/bike along the river all the way through town. Located within the Columbine Ranger District of San Juan National Forest, the 6.7 mile Animas River Trail is rated more difficult and has a starting elevation of 7,700' (Electra Lake & Mountain View Crest) and an ending elevation of 8,300' (Bridge at Needle Creek Trail) and follows the riverbank. Since this is a major drainage, all water used should be filtered to prevent possible Giardia contamination.

Only rode a few miles of the trail starting at southern-most point. Great day, sunny, 70 degrees. Use: Heavy Difficulty: More Difficult Distance: 6.7 miles. And if you want to hop off to visit a brewery, no problem! It’s well marked and paved. The river is beautiful.
